At WWE NXT Vengeance Day, Carmelo Hayes turned on Trick Williams, following Williams’ unsuccessful attempt to secure the NXT Championship from Ilja Dragunov.
At the end of the match, the pair shared what seemed to be a supportive embrace as the event concluded. However, in a surprising move, Hayes targeted Williams’ previously injured leg, taking him down. Hayes then assaulted Williams by using a chair to repeatedly strike his knee, until referees intervened to halt the brutal attack.
Over the past few months, Trick Williams has been on a quest to uncover the identity of his assailant from a backstage incident in October. In the ensuing weeks, Williams grew suspicious of Carmelo Hayes.
Lately, Hayes attempted to steer Williams away from his NXT Championship ambitions by securing their entry into the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic. Williams, aiming for the NXT Championship at Vengeance Day, reluctantly agreed to partner with Hayes with the prospect of becoming a dual champion. Despite their efforts, the duo was defeated by Bron Breakker and Baron Corbin at the beginning of Vengeance Day.
