Next month marks the commemoration of the saga between CM Punk and Samoa Joe, as their history together reaches the two-decade mark.
Rewinding back to 2004, their captivating trilogy of matches in Ring of Honor left an indelible mark on the landscape of independent professional wrestling, shaping its course for years to come. Despite Punk’s illustrious career spanning Ring of Honor, WWE, and now AEW, there remains an unresolved chapter in his rivalry with Joe—an elusive victory in a one-on-one encounter.
This week’s AEW Collision will see the latest showdown between these two ring veterans, as they collide in the semifinals of the 2023 Owen Hart Cup tournament. In the lead-up to the clash, both Punk and Joe delivered pre-taped promos on the latest episode of AEW Dynamite.
Punk, determined to conquer “The Samoan Submission Machine” once and for all, poignantly described Joe as an unconquered mountain peak. He expressed, “I look at Joe like a mountain that I’ve never quite made the summit. Another chapter in the book of Samoa Joe vs. CM Punk. This chapter ends differently for me though, it ends differently for you too. Because I’m going to win this time.”
This Saturday Night on #AEWCollision it’s CM Punk vs Samoa Joe in the semifinals of the #OwenHartFoundation Tournament! Can @CMPunk finally defeat @SamoaJoe?
