WWE executive chairman Vince McMahon has settled a lawsuit from Rita Chatterton, who was a former referee that accused him of raping her in 1986.
The exact sum of the multimillion-dollar settlement was undisclosed.
“Mr. McMahon denies and always has denied raping Ms. Chatterton,” McMahon’s personal lawyer, Jerry McDevitt, told The Wall Street Journal. “And he settled the case solely to avoid the cost of litigation.”
Chatterton’s allegations against McMahon were first made in 1992 when she said that McMahon raped her in the back of his limousine. McMahon sued her in 1993, claiming that she was a disgruntled ex-employee, but later withdrew the suit.
According to the Journal, the settlement gives Chatterton a lump upfront sum and annual installments, similar to McMahon’s previous agreements with other women who have accused him of inappropriate behavior.
